Translation as Cultural Resistance

Alexis Nouss (Nuselovici) is Professor Emeritus of General and Comparative Literature at Aix-Marseille University. A scholar of Translation Studies, migration studies and exile, he has taught and conducted research in France, the United Kingdom and Canada. His work explores the ethical, cultural and political dimensions of translation, with particular attention to questions of otherness and métissage. Recent publications include Le déportement. Petit traité du seuil et du traduire (2021, Grand Prix de traductologie 2023, Société française de
traductologie). In Translation as Cultural Resistance, Alexis Nouss explores translation as a practice shaped by thresholds, asymmetries and encounters with otherness.
Moving across literature and philosophy, migration and European history, he shows how translation can preserve
difference while creating relation. From Dante and Benja- min to the multilingual Mediterranean, the book follows
the forms through which cultures translate one another without erasing what resists translation.
Resistance thus becomes part of translation itself: the condition through which difference enters into relation.
